Obituary

Bruno Franco Canzian of Greenfield, Indiana passed away on June 9, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. Bruno was born on October 15, 1939 in Cologne, Germany to Lia ( née DeCecco) and Vittorio Canzian. Unable to leave Germany and return to their home in Campagna Italy as war broke out, they survived the horrors of those times and journeyed back to Italy where they lived till immigrating to Indianapolis in 1957 for his father's work. Bruno went to high school in Indianapolis, and despite not having any English skills, excelled and later graduated from Purdue University with a BS degree in Engineering. During the Vietnam war he served at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC with the Army Corp of Engineers.

He later worked for 50 years as an Engineer with the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Bruno is survived by his wife of 35 years, Claudette, of Greenfield, his son Michael, his daughter-in-law Beatriz and two grandchildren Gabriella and Luca of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by his sister Renata Carraro and his brother-in-law Luciano of New Jersey, and his niece Lisa Johnston of New Jersey, and his nephews Eddie Carraro of New Mexico and Paolo Carraro of Pennsylvania and cousins Anita DeCecco Boehm, Chicago, Il and Ramon DeMichiel, Macon Georgia. Also surviving are his " wonder hounds" Dixoni and Lilliana.

Bruno was preceded in death by his parents, aunts and uncles, sisters in law and brothers in law, and his beloved pets Merlot, Isabella, Roma, Ricky Bobby, Lucy and Nina.

Bruno enjoyed cooking his favorite Italian dishes as much as eating them. He preferred his own fare far more than any exquisite Restaurant could afford. He loved his family and home life with a passion. He and Claudette spent many happy years traveling to all four corners of the U.S. and frequent trips to Italy. Bruno looked forward to his annual Fall visits to his " home" in Campagna, Italy where he immersed himself with local family and friends for a couple of months. As much as he enjoyed going on these trips, he was always overjoyed to return to Claudette and their menagerie of Border Collies, hounds and one very special tabby cat he'd found as a kitten and brought home for Claudette to " take care of." He had emphasized this is only till you find her a home. Eighteen years later Nina still lived with Bruno and they adored each other.

Bruno had a gruff exterior at times, but always a soft heart. He wasn’t one to send extravagant gifts or bouquets but would gather roses from his mother’s rose garden and bring them to Claudette or leave them on her doorstep. He'd pull off the road to save a turtle trying to cross the street in traffic or bring home a hurt kitten to be cared for.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty and devotion that all of us will cherish and remember forever. He will be dearly missed.

Funeral Services will be held at St Michael's Catholic Church, Greenfield IN on June 17. 2026. Visitation at the church 10:00 am-11:00 am  Mass at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Leader Dogs for the Blind (a charity supported in the past by Bruno)

A special thank you to the staff at Charter Senior Living and Paradigm Hospice who kindly cared for Bruno in the last days.
