Donald Jay Fontaine

Donald Jay Fontaine, 89, Greenfield, passed away peacefully with family by his side, on July 23, 2023. He was born on November 8, 1933, in Clewiston, Florida, to Earle and Edith (Peter) Fontaine. Donald attended Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Indianapolis. He is a 1952 graduate of Howe High School. Following high school, Donald joined the U.S. Navy, serving our country for 8 years. He attended Butler University, Ohio State, and Elkhart University Dental School (September 1958) wanting to major in dental prosthetics. He met his wife, Marlene Nay, at Lake Tippy Dance Hall, and they married on November 30, 1958.

Donald and Marlene settled into their Greenfield home in 1960. There they started to raise their family. Donald enjoyed fishing, mowing, going to the lake, boating, camping, traveling, and bird watching. Donald was a simple man who also enjoyed story telling. In his early years Donald was an entrepreneur who owned and operated the HI Restaurant and Spudnut Donut Shop in Greenfield. He also worked for Nay Jewelry Store and Hooks Drug Corporation in their catering department. Later on he worked in the field of construction. Above all, Donald enjoyed spending time with the grandkids.

He is survived by his loving sons: Michael (Lori) Fontaine, Mark (Becky) Fontaine, and Tim (Karen) Fontaine; 10 grandchildren: Zack (Leslie) Fontaine, Catie (Mark) Brownfield, Justin (Amanda) Pettet, Chelsey (Austin) Kramer, Emily (Dillon) Kidder, Evan Fontaine, Justin (Keri) Bradley, Jason Bradley, Jacob (Risa) Fontaine, and Kaylynn Fontaine; 12 great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, John (Anita) Nay.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of nearly 50 years, Marlene Fontaine; brother, Robert Fontaine; and brother-in-law, David Nay.

Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Greenfield, is of assistance to the Fontaine family.  A private graveside service for family will be held. A Celebration of Life for Don is planned for Sunday, August 13, 2023 at the Fontaine Farm: 3525 North State Road 9,  Greenfield, IN 46140. Stop by any time after 3:30pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SHARES, Inc, 645 South State Street, Greenfield, IN 46140.
