Dortha C. Shelby December 7, 1912 - January 2, 2007
Dortha C. Shelby, 94, of Greenfield passed away Tuesday January 2, 2007 at Hancock Regional Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born December 7, 1912 in Greenfield to the late Charles E. and Gussie (Lindamood) Cook.
She was a 1931 graduate of Westland High School, serving her senior class as its president. She was a long time member of Greenfield Christian Church. She was also a member of Miriam #64 O.E.S. (Past Worthy Matron), Psi Iota Xi, and a former member of Westland Friends Church which she attended as a child and young adult. She grew up on a farm in Westland and always considered it home. She faithfully attended the Westland School reunions.
She married George W. Shelby of Jackson Township on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1937. The couple lived in Greenfield. George had started a fuel business in Greenfield in 1931. After their marriage he ran the business they both owned and she ran the household. She helped out in the Shelby Service office. For several years during the 1950s she was Director of the Hancock County Red Cross. Later she was a volunteer at Hancock Memorial Hospital. She and George shared a life-long interest in music. She played piano, organ, and cello.
Dortha is survived by sons, Charles (Suzanne), James (Glenna), and John (Shawna) all of Greenfield; 8 grandchildren, Peter (Delphine), Patrick (Bianca), Dugan (Marci), Sarah and Hannah Shelby, Amy Fletcher (Doug), Pamela Erwin (Cort), and Jennifer Graham (John); 9 great grandchildren; sister in law, Ann Cook of Guam; a niece and nephews.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Ernest, Caryl and Philip Cook.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday January 6, 2007 at Pasco-Stillinger Funeral Home with Rev. John Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery. Friends may
call 4-8 p.m. Friday January 5, 2006 at the funeral home.
