Duane Steven Slunaker December 23, 1950 - August 14, 2013
Duane Steven Slunaker, 62, passed away on August 14, 2013 at Methodist Hospital surrounded by loving family. Duane was born December 23, 1950 in Effingham, Illinois to Vaughn Walton and Virginia Bell Houchin Slunaker.
Duane was a 1969 graduate of Greenfield High School and enlisted in the US Navy following graduation. During his enlistment, he served on the USS Camden, the USS Henley and in Viet Nam.
Upon discharge from the Navy, Duane attended Lincoln Technical Institute earning an automotive and diesel technology degree. He utilized his mechanical aptitude and skills for over 35 years at Kitchen Machinery, Inc., LE Meyers and Company, and United Rentals, Inc.
Duane served as Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, and Committee Chair of BSA Troop 242 for several years. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow and earned his Wood Badge while with the troop. He enjoyed summer camp at Ransburg, the January campout (usually in the snow) at Pokagon State Park, and working in the ham and bean and pizza booths at the Riley Days Festival. He reminisced often about the camaraderie and fun of the monthly campouts and high adventure trips and valued the friends he made while involved with scouts.
Duane was an avid supporter of his sons athletic endeavors with football, swimming, wrestling, and judo. He greatly enjoyed coaching the Bengals 5th and 6th grade football team at the Boys and Girls Club and had great fun assisting his wife with "team mom" activities for the GCHS football team during his sons senior years of school.
Duane had a good smile, a keen sense of humor and a great laugh. He truly loved spending time with his grand-daughters and enjoyed watching pro and college football, fishing, target shooting, and playing frisbee and ball with his chocolate lab, Sadie, who was his constant companion.
Duane is survived by his wife of 41 years, Vicki (Cunningham) Slunaker; sons Scott Slunaker and Marc Slunaker (Kim) both of Greenfield; grand-daughters Schyler Slunaker and Paisley Slunaker (who were the light in his brown eyes and the smile in his heart); sister Yvonne Johnson (Greenfield); brothers Robert (Elizabeth) Slunaker (Greenfield), Gary Slunaker (Greenfield), Fred (Christy) Slunaker Congress, Arizona); 10 nieces and nephews, and 13 great nieces and nephews.
