Elmer Max Smith

Elmer Max Smith, 84, of New Palestine, Indiana, passed away on Friday, August 21, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his family. He was born on November 30, 1941, in Oakland City, Indiana, to the late William Francis and Juanita Virginia (Parke) Smith.

Elmer worked as a machinist for International Harvester for many years before his retirement. In his free time, he had a passion for spending time outdoors, where you could find him camping, hunting, and boating. He especially enjoyed his time spent fishing, particularly for Crappie. He served as a member of the Mooresville American Legion, Post #103. Elmer was also known for his love of Purdue sports. Above all, he loved to spend time with his family.

Elmer is survived by his three daughters, Angela (Scott) Slusher, Christine (John) Mossburg, and Dee Dobson (Vince Hoopingarner); ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and four siblings, Pete Smith, Beti Suetsugu, Bill Smith, and Pat Smith.

In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Kay (Shoultz) Smith; his son, Frank Smith; and two siblings, Cindy Johnson and Gilbert Smith.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Hendryx Chapel, 19 East Main Street, New Palestine, Indiana 46163. A graveside service will be held the following day, Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at Mossburg Cemetery, Liberty Center, Indiana, with Pastor Jeremiah Wondercheck officiating.
