Emma Frances (Lachmann) Feasel

October 26, 1940 — February 20, 2023

Emma Frances (Lachmann) Feasel, 82, Fortville, passed away peacefully Monday, February 20, 2023, at Hancock Regional Hospital, after bravely facing cancer for 18 months. She was born on October 26, 1940, at home on the family farm in Butlerville, IN, to Arthur August and Doris Abbey Ellis Edwards (Pryor) Lachmann. She is a 1958 graduate of Vernon High School. She married her love, Jack Lee Feasel, on October 3, 1959. She earned an Associate's Degree in Accounting from Vincennes University in 2002.

Emma began her career of more than 30 years with the federal government in 1958 as a stenographer with the FBI. Some time after the birth of the second of her four children she transitioned to work as a stay-at-home mom, a job at which she excelled. In 1985, with her two youngest children in high school, she returned to government employment, this time in accounting at DFAS, until she retired in 2010.

Emma was a devoted daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, and grandmother who demonstrated her love for her family every day, in big ways and small. Warm, thoughtful, giving, and humble, she also was strong, sharp-witted, witty, and wise. Emma was inquisitive by nature and enjoyed new experiences and traveling with friends and family. A voracious reader, especially of historical fiction set in faraway places, she also enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and rarely lost a game of Scrabble.

Emma was an experimental and patient gardener of flowers and ornamentals, and she tended a large, productive vegetable plot every summer when the kids were young. She loved her Indiana home and the month of October and believed in sometimes having dessert first. Emma cherished her extended family at Heather Hills Baptist Church. A woman of deep faith, she closed each day reading the Bible and giving thanks to God.

Emma is survived by her children: James (Nancy) Feasel, Denise (Jerry) Mooneyhan, Karen Feasel (Chris Clark), and Ted (Nichole) Feasel; 4 grandchildren: Lisa, Aaron, Caden, and Zara; 6 great-grandchildren: Alyssa, Michaela, Natalie, Lexie, Aaron, and Ethan; siblings: Samuel (Carolina) Lachmann and Augusta Harper; and sister-in-law, Barbara Newman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack, of 59 years; Jack's son, William Feasel; sister and brother-in-law, Bessie and John Speer; and brothers-in-law, Larry Harper and Leonard Newman.
