Everett Calvin Targett

September 13, 1932 — December 29, 2022

Everett C. Targett, born in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of Maurice and Etha Mae (Pilant) Targett, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2022, at his Greenfield home.


He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Marge) Kirk Targett, their daughter Sandra Targett Hobble, daughter-in-law Melinda Muse Targett, three grandchildren Cory Haley, Pastor Jordan (Joanna) Hobble, and Aileen (Trenton) Targett Weaver, and sister-in-law Mildred Reed (Steve) McClain. His nine great grandchildren are Rosibel Haley and Jordan Jr, William, Michael, Alice, Rebecca, Mary, Robert Everett, and Emmeline Hobble.


He was predeceased by his son Larry E. Targett and granddaughter Miranda Nicole Targett.


Among his many jobs at IU, he was proudest of serving as Houseman for President Herman B Wells beginning a friendship that lasted until Dr. Wells' death.


Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, he entered active service with the Third Infantry Division, serving from 1955 to 1957, followed by many years with Aviation Company, 38th Division, Indiana National Guard.


Everett received his B.S. degree from Kelley School of Business, Indiana University-Bloomington, where he met and married Marge, his wife for nearly sixty-eight years.


He was a member of Greenfield Christian Church for over sixty years serving as an elder, deacon, and treasurer. The role he enjoyed most was as Scoutmaster of Troop 242 where he led boys through Cubs, Scouts, and Explorers.


His business career was primarily in accounting including at Indianapolis Star-News and then at United Hospital Services where he retired as Executive Vice-President and Chief Executive Officer. Everett was a life member of Pi Kappa Phi and Hancock Masonic Lodge 101, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine, and Hancock Shrine Club. He was also a former member of Greenfield, Indiana, and Largo, Florida, Lions Clubs.


His love of the outdoors began on Everett's childhood farm, continued with his family and with years of travel and time in Brown County and the beach in Florida. His last months were spent observing deer and other wildlife in his woods.


Marge and the family appreciate the wonderful care and attention given by Matthew Chandler.

Stillinger Family Funeral Home-Pasco Greenfield Chapel is of service to the Targett family. Services will be on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at 1PM at Greenfield Christian Church, 23 North East Street, Greenfield, IN 46140 with military rites afforded. Friends may visit from 11AM until time of service. Private burial to the family will be in Park Cemetery, Greenfield.
