George Daniel Tongate

George Daniel Tongate, 66, Greenfield, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. George was born on June 2, 1957, in Indianapolis, to Jerry and Johnsie (Smith) Tongate. He attended Eastern Hancock High School.

George worked for and retired from The City of Greenfield after 30 years at the Water Treatment Plant. In addition to working for the City, George often worked additional full time employments so he could provide for his family. He was a very giving individual. He enjoyed fishing and canoeing. He played softball for many years. He was a huge Cubs and Bears fan and could often be found yelling at the TV when his teams were not doing well. George also enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events.

George is survived by his wife, Shawn Tongate; children: James (Kym) Tongate, Kelly Tongate, and Mike (Annie) Tongate; and step-children: Zachary (Alicia) Cook and Katrina Cook; 12 awesome grandchildren; 1 great-grandson and an additional on-the-way; siblings: Richard Tongate and Margaret Whiteman; and sister-in-law, Patti Tongate.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: John Tongate and Jerry Tongate; and brother-in-law, Bill Whiteman.

A Memorial Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield, with the Memorial Service immediately following, also at the funeral home.
