Irvin Edward Tenholder, Jr.

August 25, 1941 — June 12, 2025

Irvin E. (Ed) Tenholder, Jr., 83, New Palestine, IN, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2025, at home with his family. He was born August 25, 1941.

Ed graduated from Southport High School in 1960. He attended Ball State and received his Associate Degree at Sam's Technical Institute. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years as a Mess Sergeant, honorably discharged.

Ed worked at Western Electric and Rapistan, before starting his own general contracting company, Diversified Construction, for twenty years. He then did mill work at Schreiber Lumber, followed by six years teaching at the Walker Career Center before retiring in 2006. He served as the Building Inspector for the Town of New Palestine in retirement.

Ed was known for his exceptional woodworking and mechanical skills. Ed and Carol enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Palm Desert, CA, and New Smyrna Beach, FL. He has been an active volunteer at the Hancock County Food Pantry the last few years. Ed treasured the time he and Brian spent working in their shop. It was always the highlight of the weekend for him when they were together.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, of sixty years; son, Brian (Kimberly) Tenholder; granddaughter, Kylie (Henry) Burgher; and great-granddaughter, Sophia Burgher, all of Greenfield; sister, Joan (Randy) Smith of Carmel; special nieces, Stephanie (Bruce) Schubert of Ft. Wayne and Mary Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Novota of Dallas, TX; and other cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by son, Mark.

The family would like to thank the staff of Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center, for their care, treatment, and compassion, and especially Sherry Lawrence, R.N., for her valued friendship since 2006 when Ed first began his cancer journey, and for the caring and love shown by the staff of Suburban Hospice for his end-of-life care.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Michael Catholic Church, 519 Jefferson Blvd, Greenfield, on Friday, June 20, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., with one hour prior of visiting from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
