Jack Landon New August 20, 1923 - October 14, 2008
Jack L. New, 85 a lifelong resident of Greenfield, passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at Hancock Regional Hospital.
He was born August 20, 1923 in Greenfield to the late Thomas "Landon" and Grace (Martin) New.
Jack was a 1941 graduate of Greenfield High School and a 1948 graduate of Indiana University where he obtained a Political Science degree. While at I.U. he served as President of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Jack served in the U.S. Army in Europe and Japan during WWII and was awarded the Bronze Star. During the 1980s he was an adjunct professor of Political Science at I.U. and was honored as a Distinguished I.U. Alumnus. During the late 1950s Jack was a member of the Hancock County Council. He was a member of Bradley United Methodist Church, Greenfield. He was Research Director of the Indiana Democratic Party, Executive Secretary to Governor Matthew E. Welsh from 1961-1965, State Treasurer from 1965- 1967 and again from 1971-1979, ran for Governor in 1976, Chairman of the State Board of Tax Commissioners from 1989-1991. He was a lifelong member of the Greenfield American Legion #119 and the Greenfield Elks. He coordinated President Trumans whistle stops through Indiana in 1948 and was largely credited with the white hat campaign for Governor Henry Schricker. Jack was presented the Sagamore of the Wabash by Governors, Welsh, Whitcomb, Bowen, and Bayh.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Corinne (Lyon) New of Greenfield; sons, Thomas (Deborah) New of Indianapolis and John New of Greenfield; daughters, Sara St. Angelo of Indianapolis and Ann New (Mark Lovejoy) of Bainbridge Island, WA; six grandchildren, Andrew, Corinne and Anna St. Angelo, Jamie and Jack Coombes, Emily New.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel, Greenfield with Dr. John B. Wantz officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery, Greenfield. Friends may call Friday, October 17, 2008 from 4 until 8 p.m.
at the funeral home.
