Jackie Donald Coots, 82, Greenfield, passed away on September 29, 2023, in Indianapolis. Jackie was born on May 6, 1941, in Eolia, KY, to James Riley and Maude (Boggs) Coots. He graduated from Southwest Texas University with a bachelor's degree in education and electronics. He married Loretta June Boggs on September 5, 1959.
Jackie made it a mission to serve our country by joining the U.S. Air Force and then making his career from this path of service. While in the services, he taught and worked on electronics. His accolades are numerous, including a Meritorious Service Medal, Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal along with a Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and Longevity Service Award Ribbon, accompanied by many Oak Leaf Clusters. While in the services, he toured the world always with his wife by his side. Different cultures were learned and many friends gained along the way. He retired on May 31, 1982, after 22 ½ years. After retirement from the services, Jackie worked for ITT Tech as an electronics teacher. From there, he transitioned to Tokheim as an electrician, also retiring. In addition to service-connected activities, Jackie enjoyed darts, cards, and board games. He was a fierce competitor. He was a member of the American Legion.
Jackie is survived by his loving son and daughter-in-law, Norman (Carol) Coots; several in-laws; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; love of his life, wife Loretta Coots; and 11 brothers and sisters.
Visitation and a Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon in the Church Chapel on Marion VA Hospital grounds, 1700 E. 38th Street, Marion, IN 46953, with the service starting at 12:00 noon. Burial will take place next door in Marion National Cemetery, with military rites. A Committal Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., gathering at the Cemetery Shelter building.
