James T. Carrier

James T. Carrier, age 98 of Greenfield passed away, Friday, March 8, 2019 at Greenfield Healthcare. He was born in Union County, Kentucky to the late James H. and Ida Mae (Cornwell) Carrier on August 29, 1920. At the age of eight the Carrier family left Kentucky and resettled in Franklin County, Illinois. Mr. Carrier was a 1939 graduate of Frankfort Community High School and received his degrees from Southern Illinois University and Butler University. He also had two years of post-graduate studies in psychology. His lifetime work was that of educator and psychologist. He also served state-side in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After retiring in 1982 James wrote and published a series of books on the local history of Southern Illinois which covered coal mining, the depression and the hardships that the local mining families suffered. When asked why he wrote this series of books, he said, "Horace Mann said that a person should be ashamed to die without leaving something for others." James is survived by his son, Charles H. Carrier; daughters, Debra (Robert) Burns and Sally (Garry) Wright; son-in-law, Bob Holland; caregiver, Jerry Verschauren; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eula Mae Carrier; daughter, Sharon Holland; sisters, Edna Carrier, Evelyn Toms, Juanita Clifford; and brother, Gordon Carrier. Visitation will be 4-8 pm, Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield, Indiana 46140. Funeral service Thursday, 10 am at the funeral home with Pastor Matt Wickham officiating. Burial immediately following at Park Cemetery, Greenfield with military honors provided by the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard.
