James Frederick Over

James Frederick Over, 83, Greenfield, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Hancock Regional Hospital. Fred was born on September 13, 1939, in New Castle, IN, to Harold and Ina (Kitchen) Over. He graduated from New Castle High School. Fred married his sweetheart, Martha Ann Howrey, on November 26, 1965.


Fred joined the U.S. Army on February 13, 1962, and continued onto the U.S. Army National Guard until discharged on January 31, 1968. Fred worked in many capacities while at Chevrolet-Muncie.


Fred was a tremendously loving, yet outspoken, and friendly gentleman. He knew no stranger. He loved to watch old Western movies and reminisce through old Army photos. While in good health, Fred and Ann would travel all over the U.S. They took many cruises in their lifetimes. Together, they also were members of Avon Collectors Club. Fred was even one of their past presidents'. Fred was also past president, twice, of the Anderson Eagles, Post #174 as well as the past president of Aerie Area Directors' District 10. He most recently was a member of the Eagles, Muncie Lodge #231 and the American Legion, Greenfield Post #119. While in the Greenfield Post, he relished in his duties as Santa Claus and participating in Feed A Family. He was additionally a member of the American Legion 40 & 8. Fred cherished his fatherly duties in bringing his young son, Jim, on many fishing trips. And when Fred became a grandfather, he relished in bonding with his two grandsons while also bringing them fishing. Fred loved bluegrass music and would often travel to Greensboro United Methodist Church to listen to groups play. Additionally, Fred loved to sing and would often be found singing in the Trinity Park United Methodist Church choir. In 2017, Fred was honored to participate in the Honor Flight. In Fred's latter years, he enjoyed attending Greenfield's Senior Center daily with a group of friends in playing cards and listening to music.


Fred is survived by his small, but close-knit family: loving son, Jim (Laurie) Over; 2 grandsons, Logan Over and Lucas Over; sister, Norma Matney; and sister-in-law, Nancy Howrey.


He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha Ann of 55 years; siblings, Don Over and Vivian Johnson; and brothers-in-law, Gene Howrey and Myron Matney.


Visitation will be on Thursday, February 23, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield. The service will be held the following day on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Larry VanCamp officiating, also at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Park Cemetery, Greenfield, with full military honors afforded by the Greenfield Honor Guard and the U.S. Army. Memorial contributions may be made to any of the following: Trinity Park UMC, Hope House, and/or Greenfield Senior Center.
