John Evan Cross, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, in Greenfield, Indiana.
John was born on August 29, 1941, in Greenfield, Indiana, to his parents, Evan L. Cross and Mary Ella (German) Cross.
John attended Hancock Central High School and rode his pony, Liberace, to school every day. One of John’s favorite stories to share was how Liberace would take himself home once John was safely at school, much to the dismay of local law enforcement. On one such trip home, Liberace was even picked up by police while walking himself down the main road on his way back to the Cross residence. John was a lifelong lover of horses and all things cowboy. His passion for horses was so strong that he later served as President of the Indiana Horse Association for a time.
John worked as a mechanic for Yellow Freight for 31 years before retiring in 1994.
John lived a life marked by service to others and to the Lord. He was a devoted member of Carrollton United Methodist Church in Fountaintown. He also served his community as a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Fountaintown Fire Department for 21 years.
John is survived by his three loving children: Tony (Connie) Cross, Charmaine Cross (Brian Hubbard), and Steve (Ann) Cross; two grandchildren, Chelsie (Doug) Sweazy and Courtney (Ross) Meyer; and four great-grandchildren, Collin Sweazy, Carolina Sweazy, Maverick Meyer, and Macie Meyer. He is also survived by his longtime companion and best friend, Nancy Braun.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Patty Reeves and Marlene Sheley.
John has saddled up for his final ride, now resting peacefully in the arms of his Lord.
