Joyce Lee (Jones) Mccutcheon

April 10, 1931 — August 1, 2025

Joyce Lee (Jones) McCutcheon, age 94 of Somerset, KY formerly of Indianapolis, IN, died Friday, August 1, 2025. She was born at home in Ritner, KY on April 10, 1931, to the late John Osburn and Mattie Rose (Roberts) Jones. She attended a one-room schoolhouse through 8th grade. While living and working in Monticello, KY she enrolled in high school at Wayne County High School and graduated in three years, in 1951.


She was married to Jess H. Alexander, Jr. from April 1951 to November 1963 and moved to Indianapolis, IN to live and work. Joyce and Jess welcomed 2 children, Sondra Lynn and Jess H. Alexander III. She later married Robert McCutcheon in June 1965, gaining two additional children, Delina Carter and James McCutcheon.


Joyce worked at RCA for 15 years as an electronic mechanics helper and later transitioned to Naval Avionics Facility, Indianapolis (NAFI) where she worked until her retirement in June 1987. During her time at NAFI, she moved to office work in the print area and later into Budget and Accounting. She received several commendations and awards for cost-saving improvements.


After retirement she enjoyed traveling, gardening, volunteering, needlework and ceramic painting. She was a long-term member of the Hancock County Hospital Guild accumulating over 4500 hours doing various jobs over the years. Joyce took care of in-house plants, delivered mail and later did crafts and made baskets for sale in the gift shop. Joyce and Robert spent many happy winters in Fort Myers Beach and Cocoa Beach, FL until his death in 2009.


She was an active member of Sunnyside Road Baptist Church originally named Eastern Heights Baptist Church until COVID in 2020. Joyce taught Sunday School, worked on Budget and Nominating Committees as well as working with children in the nursery.


Joyce was a kind, gentle person that overcame many obstacles in her life and remained a wonderful teacher and mentor.

She is survived by her daughter, Sondra Lynn and her youngest granddaughter, Jessica Marie Alexander; stepdaughter, Delina (Jim) Carter; and one sister, Ruth (Dennis) Nance. She also still enjoyed a brother-in-law, Charles, and a sister-in-law, Geneva. Joyce was blessed with a total of 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She included many nieces and nephews among her loved ones.


She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; son, Jess Alexander Jr.; stepson, James McCutcheon; 2 brothers, Boyce (Annette) Jones and Floyd (Geneva) Jones; also losing two sisters, Clara (Charles) Jacobs and Clova (Elmer) Rains.


Services at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2025. Friends and family may call beginning at 10 a.m. A lite lunch will follow the services at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield, IN. A private family burial will occur later. Stillinger Family Funeral Home in Greenfield, IN will be providing arrangements, with Brother John Dimmick presiding over services.
