Lela M. Johnson, age 97, of Knightstown, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield. She was born on June 6, 1920 in Dunkirk, Indiana to the late Ernest & Eva (Roberts) Maxwell.
Lela graduated from Maxwell High School and would soon after marry the love of her life, Duard L. Johnson, on November 12, 1938. She spent her career working at the Indiana Highway Department in Greenfield from 1969-1974 and the Indiana Soldiers & Sailors Home in Knightstown as the Payroll Clerk from 1974-1985. Lela was a devoted follower of Christ and was a faithful member of the Charlottesville United Methodist Church, where she was active within the UMW. Lela always put others before herself, and made it her life goal to do something nice for someone daily. She enjoyed flowers, cooking and was known to bake custards for her friends when they were ill. Lela was a die-hard Indiana Pacers fan who never missed watching a game. She was a member of the Henry County Farm Bureau, and the Kennard, Straughn, and Wilkinson Brother and Sisterhoods.
Left to cherish Lelas memory is her son, Craig (Susan) Johnson of Vincennes; daughter-in-law, Cheryl (Ted) Rath; brother, Larry "Ike" Maxwell; grandchildren, April (Nick) Ernstes; Seth (Tiffany) Johnson; Holly (Greg) Tisdale; great-grandson, Jared Ernstes; and great-granddaughter, Paige Ernstes. Preceding Lela in death are her parents mentioned above; brothers, Paul; Robert; William; Jay; Lee; Buss; Enos Maxwell; and sisters, Ruth Apple and Eileen Bradley.
Visitation for Lela will be held from 11:00am to 1:00pm on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel of Greenfield, 1780 W. Main St, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm immediately following visitation. Burial will follow the funeral service at Park Cemetery in Greenfield, 621 S. State St, Greenfield, IN 46140.
