Maurice Mayfield, 90, of Greenfield, passed away Monday, November 17, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 2, 1935, in Chrisney, Indiana to the late James and Charlotte (Badger) Mayfield. Maury graduated from Tell City High School in 1953. He later received his certificate in mortuary science from the Indiana School of Mortuary Science in 1960. That same year, on October 1, Maury married the love of his life, Jane. Four wonderful children would follow their marriage.
Maury’s faith, marriage, and family were his most important relationships. Maury joined the Catholic Church in 1970 and fully embraced its teachings. Maury truly lived his life as a faithful servant of God. He was a student of the Apostle Paul and used his teachings as a guiding example. Maury’s faith was the cornerstone of his life, and he modeled that through his actions to his family, friends, and his vocation to funeral service.
Maury never truly retired from funeral service. From the time he graduated in 1960 up until September 2025, he could always be found in a funeral home. Whether that be working a calling, working in the preparation room, or chatting it up with every living soul he could find. He worked for various funeral homes in Fortville, Tell City, New Castle, and Greenfield.
Maury was a former member of the Lion’s Club and the Kiwanis Club. He also served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years. When he wasn’t working at the funeral home, Maury could be found cheering on his favorite sports teams, taking care of his numerous houseplants, collecting Department 56 houses, and most importantly, spending time with his family. Maury was incredibly proud of his role as a grandpa and great grandpa. Anytime a grandchild told them he loved him, he would always respond with “I love you too, baby.”
He is survived by his loving wife, Jane (Rhodes) Mayfield; children, Julie (Tim) Bowers, Lori Mayfield, Sherri (Paul) Sams, Tony Mayfield; brother, James Mayfield; grandchildren, Sarah (Clay) Bowers, Rachel (Tim) Matheson, Tanner (Alyssa) Mayfield, Allison (Tristan) Gold, Sophie Sams, Audrey Sams; great-grandchildren Wesley, Luke, Hadley, Harper, and Hazel.
He is preceded in death by his parents, as listed above, and his sister Bettye Pierce.
