Richard Ray Alexander

July 31, 1940 — March 28, 2026

Greenfield, Indiana

Richard Ray Alexander, 85, of Greenfield, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 28, 2026, surrounded by friends and loved ones. Born in Indianapolis to Ray and Dorothy (VanScyoc) Alexander, "Dick" grew up with a passion for athletics and community. He was a proud graduate of Howe High School and went on to attend Wabash College, where he competed at the collegiate level in both cross country and track.

After three years of study, Dick returned to Indianapolis to serve as a bookkeeper for Blue and White Services, the same company where he had worked as a teenager. It was there that he met the love of his life, Norma Lee (Slaven) Alexander. The two were wed on October 9, 1965, beginning a journey of over 60 years together.

Dick also honorably served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force Reserves. In December 1968, his unit was called to active duty and stationed in Vietnam. Upon his return, he resumed his career at Blue and White Services, where he remained a pillar of the company for nearly 40 years until its closing in 2001.

Dick’s life was defined by an unwavering devotion to his family and his faith in Jesus Christ. A longtime, dedicated member of Sunnyside Road Baptist and, more recently, Buck Creek Baptist Church, he lived his values through his kindness and service to others. He was a talented amateur craftsman who found joy in woodworking, basket weaving and creating intricate stained glass pieces. Additionally, he enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, following auto racing and cheering on his favorite sports teams. Most importantly, he loved his seven grandchildren. His biggest smiles were generated over family meals and holiday celebrations, as well as watching them participate in sports and the arts.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Norma Alexander; his children, Christopher Alexander (Muncie, IN) and Melinda “Mindy” Smock (New Palestine, IN); and his cherished grandchildren: Zachary (Corey) Alexander, Marley Alexander, Eli Alexander, Ella Alexander, Noah Smock, Emilee (Andre) Petersen, and Samantha Smock. He also leaves behind his siblings: Barbara (Rich) DeLong, Sandra (Leonard) Justice, and Jeff (Nancy) Alexander.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Jeff Smock.
