Sam J. Salyers, Jr. March 14, 1921 - November 2, 2010
Sam J. Salyers, Jr., 89, a resident of Greenfield passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the Golden Living Center, Brandywine.
He was born March 14, 1921 in Jasper County, Illinois and was the son of the late Samuel and Bonnie Mae (Jones) Salyers.
Sam served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the South Pacific. He was a graduate of General Motors Institute of Flint, Michigan and worked as a Field Engineer in Development and was a Department Manager at Allison Transmission Division of General Motors for 47 years. He was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, Amity United Methodist Church and former member of the Philadelphia Cemetery Board. He enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by a son, Larry Joe (Linda) Salyers of Greenfield; sisters, Cherryl Cannon of Mechanicsburg, Wanda Fava of New Jersey, Rosemary Ostermeyer of Greenfield, Joyce Burnham of Greenfield, Judy Huber of Greenfield; brothers, Chester Salyers of Terre Haute, Bob Salyers of Greenfield; three grandchildren, Rachel (Brian) Dougherty, Holly Hancock, Brett (Kelsie) Salyers; three great-grandchildren, Colin and Caroline Dougherty, Karlie Salyers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Welling) Salyers; son, Jerry Wayne Salyers; brother, Gerald Saylers
Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 5, 2010 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel, Greenfield with Pastor Larry Bush officiating. Burial will follow at Philadelphia Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday, November 4, 2010 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. as well as one hour prior to the funeral.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Amity United Methodist Church, 6042 W 100 N Greenfield, Indiana 46140.
Comments Our prayers and thoughts are with Joe & Linda and the entire Salyers family. Debbie and I will certainly miss Sam. When we were first married Sam & Mary were an " encouragement to us. They took me to church when I was a teenager. They have been a blessing to many. We are Military missionaries near the U.S.Army Post in Grafenwoehr, Germany. Thank God for men like Sam Salyers. I'm very sorry for the loss of your father Larry. I actually knew your dad before I knew you. He was a good friend of my grandfather Perry Hoyt who was a tool and die " maker at Allison for over forty years.

We send our thoughts and prayers to Joe and Linda and the entire Salyers Family. Debbie and I both new and cared for Sam & Mary Salyers. We are in Germany now " working at a church that ministers to the U.S. Army families at the Army Post here in Grafenwoehr, Germany.
