Ted Ray Thompson, 87, Fairland, IN, passed away on October 29, 2024, at Ashford Place in Shelbyville, IN. Ted was born on March 19, 1937, in Shelbyville, Indiana, to Roscoe and Frances (Hogue) Thompson. He is a 1955 graduate of Moral High School. He married Catherine Lorraine Martinez. Ted was a member of the U.S. Army National Guard, obtaining specialist 5th class.
Ted pursued his schooling with degrees from both Indiana Central College as well as Indiana University, majoring in education. He started his career at Clark High School in Johnson County then moved onward to become vice principal and athletic director at New Palestine High School. He then moved to Northwestern Consolidated Schools in Shelby County finishing his career at Triton Central High School where he was principal and then superintendent. He retired in January 1997. Ted was a member of Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents, a founding charter member of the Fairland Triton Community Lions Club, a lodge member of Sugar Creek Masonic Lodge #279 in Fairland, and a union carpenter. Hobbies included being an avid deer hunter, hunting wild turkey, fisherman, and woodworker. Ted crafted his own furniture. His love for his Sheltie dogs was immense. Catherine and Ted would often travel. He was very involved with his children's school activities as well as when they started their families, then attending all of their activities. Ted was proud of his community of Fairland area and Moral Township and loved the small-town atmosphere. He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
Ted is survived by his loving daughters: Annette Thompson, Nancy Thompson, and Suzan (Jim) Wittman; 3 grandsons: Matt (Candice) Wittman, Randy (Angie) Wittman, and Jarrett Kermode; 6 great-grandchildren: Mason, AJ, Drayton, Kendall, Lilah, and Brylie; sister, Rose Mary Dial; nephew, Doug Dial; and beloved sheltie dogs, Wendy and Ginger.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roscoe D. Thompson; mother, Frances Chounard; wife, Catherine; nephew, Danny Dial; and brother-in-law, Carroll Dial.
Visitation will be on Monday, November 4, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Stillinger Family Funeral Home- Cumberland Chapel, 11636 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN. The funeral service will be held the following day, Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., also at the funeral home, with Pastor Mark Kern officiating. Burial will be in New Palestine Cemetery.
