Verna Mae Morris

Verna Mae Long Morris, 90, of Greenfield, Indiana passed away September 23, 2016 at McCormicks Creek Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing in Spencer, Indiana. She was born May 12, 1926, in Marion, Ohio to the late Enos Hollis and Spray Alma Long. While attending high school in Lima, Ohio she worked at the Davis Drugstore and volunteered at the Lima Memorial Hospital as a candy striper. She played trumpet in the school band and won the Foreign Language award her senior year. She was employed by the Kemmer Insurance Company after high school. She met her husband, C.L. (Corky) Morris, at the First Baptist Church in Lima and was married on November 3, 1946. Verna and Corky lived in Cincinnati and Hillsboro, Ohio prior to relocating to Greenfield, Indiana where Corky served as administrator of the Hancock County Memorial Hospital for many years. Verna was a member of the Greenfield Christian Church, active in the Christian Womens Fellowship, Rebekah Circle, and Spirit Sowers, and served in leadership roles for the churchs Riley Days Fall Festival fund-raising activities. She was a member of several community organizations including the Psi Iota Xi philanthropic sorority, the Homemakers Club, and the Greenfield Country Club. She was a member and leader of the Womens Auxiliary volunteers of the Hancock County Memorial Hospital for many years and later served as a teachers assistant at the St. Michael Catholic School. Verna was preceded in death by her husband C. L. Morris, her son Gerald Lee Morris, and her sisters Marie Alma Simica, Marjorie Helena Ochwat, and Wilda Jean Kahler. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Kay Makely, her son Barry Alan Morris, and grandchildren Addison, Madeleine, and Jackson Morris. Verna was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and community volunteer and leader. She was loved and respected by everyone she met, including her many friends among the residents and staff of Crown Pointe Senior Living in Greenfield and McCormicks Creek Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing in Spencer, Indiana. She was known to be among the best at entertaining and hostessing and never hesitated to offer encouragement and support for those in need. A Celebration of Life will be held from 11:30 to 1:00 pm on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at the Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Christian Womens Fellowship, Greenfield Christian Church, 23 North East Street, Greenfield, IN 46140.
