Rev. W. Marcus Kendall April 29, 1916 - October 13, 2007
The Rev. W. Marcus Kendall passed away peacefully surrounded by family members on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at Westminster Village North, Indianapolis. Marcus was born April 29, 1916 in Greenville, Illinois to the late Dr. William H. and Orrel (Ryer) Kendall.
In 1943 he married the late Suzanne (Arnold) Kendall, with whom he shared a 35 year union.
He was a 1937 graduate of the College of Wooster, OH, and a 1940 graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, NJ. He was ordained by the Indianapolis Presbytery into the First Presbyterian Church of Greenfield on June 16, 1940 and served as Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenfield from 1940 to 1943. He was a Chaplain /Major in the US Army for two years, having served his country in Italy during WWII.
Rev. Kendall served as director of the Westminster Foundation, IU Bloomington, from 1946 to 1949. He was the Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Brazil, IN, from 1949 to 1956, at which time he took a position in fund raising with the Board of National Missions, where he became Field Director of New Church Building and Finance, Chicago, IL, in 1962. He later worked with the Presbyterian Housing Program as a Retirement & Financial Consultant. In 1979 he assumed the position of Assistant Pastor at the First- Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis and retained the position until 1981 when he became the Interim Pastor for the Southminster Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, and also the First Presbyterian Church in Greenfield. In 1982 Rev. Kendall served as the Interim Executive Presbyter of the Whitewater Valley Presbytery in Indianapolis and became Interim Supply of the First Presbyterian Church in Rushville and Interim Senior Pastor of the Irvington Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis over the next two years.
He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Hancock #101, F. & A.M., Greenfield Yorkrite, as well as the American Legion Post 1771, Indianapolis.
Rev. Kendall is also preceded in death by his second wife, Carolyn Thalhamer Adams, whom he married in 1979.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. Jeff A. and Mrs. Jan Kendall of Carmel; daughter, Annette Kendall of Indianapolis; step-daughter, Susie Mattingly of Nashville, IN; sister, Carol Forthofer of Annapolis, MD.; sixteen grandchildren; eleven great- grandchildren; and many friends at Westminster Village North. He will be remembered for his quiet and gentle spirit, his easy smile and his love for family and friends.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 1:00 pm at the Greenfield First Presbyterian Church. Friends may call at the church from 11:00 to 1:00 pm. Burial will follow in Park Cemetery.
