Wayne Brooks

Wayne Brooks, 91, went to be with his Lord on May 2, 2021. He was born in Hancock County, Indiana on August 7, 1929 to the late William C. and Mary Brooks Hook. His Loving wife of 72 years, Helen (Roberts) Brooks still survives. Wayne was employed by Greenfield Milk and Ice Cream for 37 years. He is remembered by many as the ice cream man. He had a summer ice cream route throughout Greenfield for many years. Following the closing of Greenfield Milk and Ice Cream he was employed by Greenfield Power and Light until his retirement. Wayne was a firefighter for over 40 years. He served as acting chief and assistant fire chief with the Greenfield Fire Department. He loved the camaraderie of the firefighters and was affectionately known as Dutch. Wayne also worked part-time for the Greenfield Boys and Girls Club. It was there he learned to box as a boy. In 1949 he won the Golden Gloves Middleweight Division Championship in Indianapolis. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and served in the Indiana National Guard. Wayne loved the Cincinnati Reds and spent many hours watching Reds games. They were also his favorite topic of conversation. He enjoyed playing Euchre and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Helen (Roberts) Brooks; daughters: Connie (Tim) Wilson, Paula Bell, Trudy Labrecque, and Cindy (Sherwood) Haydock; son, Wayne (Cathy) Brooks; sister, Harriet (Larry) O'Connor; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Alma Hook, Marie Perguson, and Doris Phares; and brother, Paul Brooks. Friends may call 10:30am until 1:00 pm, Thursday, May 6, 2021 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield, Indiana 46140. Funeral Service at 1:00 pm with burial immediately following at Park Cemetery, Greenfield.
