William (Bill) Baker of Pendleton, Indiana passed away Tuesday, November 3rd at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Millstone, Kentucky in 1927, Bill was 93 years old.
Bill is survived by the love of his life – wife Wilma of 68 years. They were married in January of 1952.
Also surviving are their two daughters of Pendleton, Indiana – Ruby Baker Simmons (Jerry) and Rhonda Baker Ludwig (Patrick); four grandchildren – Michael Johnson, Roianne Johnson, Lacie Ludwig and Justin Ludwig (Sara Hilderbrand); and two great-grandsons – Carson Johnson and Coleton Johnson along with several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edd and Jane (Bentley) Baker of Millstone, Kentucky; three brothers – Carl, Martin and Leonard Baker and three sisters – Melinda Taylor, Nancy Bostain and Lula (Kilgore) Bowers. Bill was the youngest of his siblings.
At the age of 18, Bill was a WWII veteran serving in Germany as a Corporal in the E Troop 94th Const. SQN A.P.O. 225 in the United States Army. He worked as a coal miner for the Elkhorn Coal Mining Company in Hemphill, Kentucky for 10 years. He was also employed by GMC in Detroit, Michigan for 2 years; in Jackson, Ohio for the Government Atomic Plant and as an inspector; for the New York Central and Penn Central Railroad in Beech Grove, Indiana for 19 years. Bill also worked for Roll Coater in Greenfield, Indiana for 11 years before retiring in 1989.
After retirement, Bill was able to pursue his real passion of farming and selling fruits & vegetables at his roadside stand. He also enjoyed trimming shrubs & trees as a contractor. Bill was a member of the VFW Post #2693 in Greenfield, Indiana.
Friends may call 2:00-5:00 P.M., Sunday, November 8, 2020 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield, Indiana 46140. Funeral service 11:00 Monday at the funeral home with burial immediately following at Park Cemetery with military rites provided by the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard.
