Greenfield, Indiana, county seat of Hancock County, is a wonderful place to call home; and at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, we are proud to be part of its historic family-oriented culture that embodies Hoosier Hospitality. Stillinger Family Funeral Home and its predecessor, Pasco Memorial Mortuary have served Greenfield and Hancock County residents since 1912, and we look forward to serving our friends and neighbors for generations to come. Here’s a quick overview of the community we know and love, with some links to helpful information:
The Life of Riley
Probably Greenfield’s most famous native son was James Whitcomb Riley, the poet and influential author of children’s classics such as Little Orphant Annie and The Raggedy Man. Wikipedia credits Riley with contributing to the “creation of a midwestern cultural identity” and the “Golden Age of Indiana Literature”. Riley’s hometown strongly influenced his writing; in fact, his often-referenced “Old Swimming Hole” stands today in Riley Park on the east side of town. A statue of James Whitcomb Riley stands on the courthouse lawn; and each year in October, the town holds Riley Days, a festival named for the poet. Chancy Pasco, forebear of what is now Stillinger Family Funeral Home was honored to be invited to assist in Riley’s funeral in 1918. Today, Greenfield is home to the Riley Home Museum on Main Street.
The National Road
Main Street in Greenfield is part of US Route 40, also known as the Historic National Road. Constructed through Hancock County around 1835, the National Road became a major artery that served to connect the expanding Midwest with the growing urban eastern parts of the country. The heart of town expands from the intersection of US 40 and SR 9 (Main and State Streets). Naturally, pioneers who traveled the National Road in pre-Civil War days would be astounded by the growth of the once-quaint community in all directions.
